COVID Superheroes aim to be a global community that is equipped to fight COVID-19 misinformation using the power of truth, science, and community action.
COVID Superheroes are regular people like you who have gained specialized training through the COVID Superheroes online course, to use COVID-19 science towards tackling the COVID-19 misinformation online. Once you become an intern, you will develop a set of skills through the online training program, and get certified as a COVID Superhero. Subsequently, you will get promoted from an intern to a partner in the COVID Superheroes community.
The COVID infodemic is an overabundance of wrong information that can undermine public health response and cause harm to people’s physical and mental health. Misinformation during the pandemic can lead to stigmatization, create vaccine hesitancy, and ultimately cost lives (World Health Organization).
As a COVID Superhero, you will be a proud member of a team that has been working since the beginning of the pandemic, and has posted more than 15,000 short-form messages that have been viewed over 2 million times. With a growing community of Superheroes, we can increase this effort substantially and magnify the value of truth during the COVID pandemic. We are motivated by the power of truth in the post-truth era, and aim to make a difference using science to tackle misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. We aim to build a community that uses the power of short-form messages, science, and youth empowerment to contribute to the pandemic response.
COVID Superheroes are required to have knowledge of the English language. In addition, scientific communication skills, prior social media experience, and the ability to read and interpret scientific literature will be additional assets. This is an online, part-time (4-10 hours per week), and voluntary community-driven effort. We are an equal opportunity community, and applications are encouraged from socially disadvantaged and underrepresented sections of society.
In addition to tackling the infodemic in the post-truth era, you will also develop your professional skills by learning to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the general population, identify sources of credible scientific information, and enhance your networking and leadership skills. Upon completion of the course, you will also be certified as a COVID Superhero and get promoted from being an intern to being a community partner. In addition, you will also learn to use social media such as Twitter to effectively communicate and engage with a diverse global online audience, while expanding your own personal social media network.
